L10 · Solar Stinger: a Georgia Tech digital twin

Real buses, buildings and sun, a real materials database, and one question: could the Stinger fleet run on sunshine from campus roofs?

The twin: campus roofs coloured by shading loss, live buses replaying GPS, charger beacons

Open web/index.html by double-clicking it. It needs an internet connection the first time, for three.js from jsDelivr.

1. The question

GT's Stinger buses are diesel. Suppose they went battery-electric, as most US transit agencies are now doing:

  1. How much energy would the fleet need? Answered from the buses' actual driving, not a brochure number.
  2. Could campus rooftops supply it, and when? Annual totals are the easy part. Hour-by-hour timing is the hard part.
  3. What charging infrastructure is needed? How big a battery, and how many chargers.
  4. What should the panels be made of? Screened from 17,579 real DFT-computed semiconductors.

These four sub-models come from four fields (vehicle dynamics, solar resource, operations research and materials informatics). What makes this a digital twin rather than four scripts is that they share one geometry, one clock and one weather year.

Bus energy (battery side), per second of real driving:

$$P_{batt} = \frac{1}{\eta_\pm}\,\Big(m\,k_{rot}\,a + m g C_{rr}\cos\theta + m g \sin\theta + \tfrac12\rho C_dA\,v^2\Big)\,v \;+\; P_{aux}(T)$$

where $\eta_+ = 0.85$ when driving and a factor of $\eta_- = 0.60$ is recovered when braking. $P_{aux} = 4 + \min(0.9\,|T-20|,\,25)$ kW. The bus is a 35-ft BEB of 14.1 t with $C_dA = 5\ \mathrm{m^2}$ and $C_{rr} = 0.009$ (all assumptions, all at the top of fleet.py).

Rooftop PV, per roof point i and hour t:

$$G_{i,t} = G^{beam}_t\,[\alpha_{sun,t} > h_i(\phi_{sun,t})] + G^{sky}_t\,\mathrm{SVF}_i + G^{ground}_t,\qquad \mathrm{SVF}_i=\overline{\cos^2 h_i(\phi)}$$

where $h_i(\phi)$ is the skyline elevation seen from the point in compass direction $\phi$, ray-marched across a 1 m building-height raster. Output is $\eta_{mod}\,G\,(1+\gamma(T_{cell}-25))\cdot PR$, with a 10° south-facing tilt, 60% of the roof usable and PR = 0.86.

3. Results

Energy: the fleet is small and the roofs are huge

Electric Stinger demand (5 campus routes, semester weekdays, TMY weather) 841 MWh/yr
Rooftop potential, all 320 campus buildings, 277k m² of panels, 21.7% Si 82.8 GWh/yr (about 100× the fleet)
Roofs needed to break even over a year 1: the Campus Recreation Center alone makes ~2,200 MWh/yr
Solar fraction with no storage, daytime opportunity charging 63%
Solar fraction with no storage, overnight depot charging 0%

energy balance

Headline finding: energy is not the constraint, timing is. Buses that charge while the sun is up get 63% solar with no storage, and 85% with 1 MWh of storage. Buses that charge overnight need about 4 MWh of stationary storage to reach 85%. That is a charging-strategy decision, not a panel decision.

Storage (MWh) 0 0.25 0.5 1 2 4 8
Solar fraction, daytime charging 63% 71% 77% 85% 91% 96% 98%
Solar fraction, overnight charging 0% 7% 15% 29% 55% 85% 95%

Fleet: what real Stinger driving costs

Route km map-matched mean speed time stopped kWh/mi @18 °C speed corr. vs API
Red 962 4.7 mph 46% 2.64 0.76
Gold 1066 5.1 mph 43% 2.58 0.75
Green 325 5.7 mph 53% 2.73 0.90
Clough 694 4.3 mph 42% 2.67 0.56

fleet energy

Campus buses are extremely slow: they are stopped almost half the time. As a result, auxiliaries dominate. At 5 mph, a 4 kW base load alone costs 0.8 kWh/mi, and winter heating more than doubles consumption, as the right-hand panel shows. At the wheel, accelerating the bus is the largest single cost, and regen recovers about a third of the wheel energy.

Charging design: SimPy, 30 replications with common random numbers

charging design

The DES models buses reneging: a bus that finds the charger busy leaves on schedule rather than wait. That captures the real operational tension between the timetable and the battery.

Materials: the screen narrows but cannot rank

Screening funnel: 17,579 Materials Project semiconductors → 1,671 with a calibrated gap of 1.0–1.9 eV → 608 with anion chemistry → 157 earth-abundant (≥1 ppm crust) → 103 non-toxic → 81 with supply-risk HHI < 5000.

materials

The best "new" candidates are transition-metal phosphides: CoP2 (mp-14285), VP4, FeP2, CrP4. Each has an expected SQ efficiency of about 24.9%, versus 33.4% for silicon. The gap between them is not chemistry. It is uncertainty: the DFT gap has a ±0.73 eV calibration error, which is wider than the whole SQ plateau. A known material with a measured gap beats an unmeasured one. That is the honest lesson of high-throughput screening, and the reason the field moves to HSE06/GW calculations and then to the lab.

thin film

The HTEM reality check: NREL's 9,644 sputtered films from 220 libraries have a median thickness of 180 nm (10th to 90th percentile: 34–580 nm). At 180 nm, a direct-gap absorber keeps about 90% of its SQ efficiency, given an ideal back reflector. Real sputtered-film thicknesses are therefore in the right range for thin-film PV, provided the absorption is direct-gap strong.

4. Verification & validation (every number from the last run)

Check Expected Got
Horizon ray-march vs analytic wall (20 m wall, 40 m away) 26.3° 26.4°
TMY global horizontal irradiation, Atlanta ~1,500–1,800 kWh/m²/yr 1,548
Specific yield, unshaded low-tilt c-Si PVWatts Atlanta ≈ 1,400 kWh/kWp 1,411
Shockley–Queisser peak (AM1.5G) 33.7% at 1.34 eV (Rühle 2016) 33.69% at 1.34 eV
SQ at the Si gap 33.3–33.4% 33.41%
Gap calibration beats PBE-only fit out-of-sample LOO-RMSE lower 0.73 vs 0.90 eV ✓
Consumption inside NREL's in-service BEB envelope (slow-duty widened) 1.2–3.5 kWh/mi 2.58–2.73
Every route's DEM elevation loop closes net climb < 3 m ✓
DES: charger busy time ≤ charges × layover invariant ✓ (431 charges, 47% utilisation)
Storage dispatch conserves energy PV − curtailed + grid = load ✓

Misses and caveats, stated honestly: - Consumption sits at the top of NREL's 1.7–2.5 kWh/mi range. That's expected for 5 mph duty, but the model is not validated against a real electric Stinger (there is none to compare against). - Speed correlation with the API's own speed field is only 0.56 on Clough, where the GPS is noisiest.

8. Run it

# from SimulationLab/
# data/ is already cached in the repo; to re-fetch, set GT_BUS_API_KEY (the public map key bus.gatech.edu's page sends)
uv run python L10_solar_stinger_twin/fetch.py # ~2 min, elevation API is rate-limited

# then double-click L10_solar_stinger_twin/web/index.html

The page: drag to orbit, scroll to zoom and hover roofs or buses. Scrub the time of day and the date, and switch tabs to change the panel material, battery, storage and charging strategy. Every KPI recomputes live with the same dispatch code as Python.

9. Code tour

File What it does
fetch.py downloads and caches routes/stops, OSM, campus boundary, TMY, route elevations and HTEM films; decodes the polylines
extract_materials.py reads the GNN project's pickle (read-only) and writes data/materials.json with structures, HHI and Δχ
campus.py OSM → building prisms (height heuristic), height raster, roof points, Numba horizons, shaded_poa, hourly_total, pvlib weather
materials.py SQ efficiency(), thin_film_absorb, calibrate() (two-feature, LOO), screening funnel, HTEM stats
fleet.py load_gps (timezone repair), track (tracking map-matcher), drive_cycles, battery_kw, analyse_route, annual_demand, SimPy fleet_day + design_study
twin.py orchestrates everything, runs dispatch and roofs_needed, draws the figures and exports web/data.js
web/index.html the twin: Three.js scene, sun/shadows, GPS replay, KPIs, crystal viewer and charts (~600 lines, no build step)

10. Simplifications & ceilings (the main ones are also marked ponytail: in code)

11. Go further

  1. Rebuild the twin in CesiumJS, with Google Photorealistic 3D Tiles or OSM Buildings for real heights and terrain.
  2. Swap the greedy dispatch for an optimiser (SciPy linprog or NREL REopt) that co-optimises battery size, charger count and a time-of-use tariff.
  3. Couple to SUMO: drive the buses through simulated Atlanta traffic instead of replaying GPS, then study bus bunching, the problem the Stinger Delay project was trying to predict.
  4. Close the materials loop: retrain the Band Gap GNN on HSE06 gaps, re-screen, and see whether the ±0.73 eV uncertainty shrinks enough to rank the phosphides.
  5. Bring in real campus load: GT's utility data would let you ask whether the Kendeda Building's own PV canopy could run the Kendeda chargers.
